Biophilic Design & Wildflowers

There is a slow but sustained movement away from purely functional building and landscape design, towards one that is more in tune with, or inspired by, its natural surroundings.

Biophilic Design focusses on restoring our connection with nature in direct and indirect ways. In this webinar, we look at all the ways that wildflowers in particular help this connection and the key benefits they offer.

James Hewetson-Brown (MD of Wildflower Turf Ltd)

James Hewetson-Brown is the Managing Director of Wildflower Turf Limited, the UK’s leading specialist supplier of Wildflower Turf used for landscaping and green roof projects.

He has spent his working lifetime in agriculture and is a graduate of Seale Hayne Agricultural College. His strong interest in biodiversity led to the development of the concept of Wildflower Turf in 2003. Since then, James has conducted a significant amount of research into the establishment of wildflower landscapes in the built environment.

James has a practical and pragmatic approach to his wild flower thinking. From gardens to civil engineering, he has helped develop many wild flower spaces giving him a unique insight into the realistic requirements for successful results. He is the author of the book ‘How to make a Wildflower Meadow’ and conducts Open Days at the Wildflower Turf Ltd HQ in North Hampshire and regularly gives presentations and talks on the subject to a wide variety of audiences.

Alia Fadel

Dr. Alia Fadel is an educator, architect and landscape architect, biophilic design consultant, and ethnographic observation specialist in urban settings and collegiate campuses. Currently, she is a Lecturer in Landscape Architecture at Leeds Beckett University, UK.

Dr. Fadel accomplished both her Master Degree of Landscape Architecture and Doctorate Degree of Philosophy in Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA. As she believes in the ethical responsibility to research and design for human health and well-being, Dr. Fadel’s scholarly work focuses on the interrelationship between Design, Health, and Contact with Nature in Urban Environments.

Her teaching, research, and practical experience extends to include notable international universities and academic institutions in Egypt, USA, and UK.

Giles Miller

Giles Miller is a British designer, artist and creative whose work spans surface, architectural and sculptural projects.  His eponymous and award-winning studio was set up in 2011 and produces projects for clients globally.

Giles flunked a degree in Business Management before starting again on a Furniture Design course. He went on to graduate with a Masters in Design Products from London’s Royal College of Art, and has since created acclaimed and award-winning work for some of the world’s most prestigious brand-names across a variety of industries.

The characteristic Giles Miller Studio aesthetic comes from the fusion of technology with the handmade. The resulting complexity of meticulously arranged components creates richness, tactility, depth and allure.

Notable projects include an architectural pavilion on the Cannes beachfront for the BBC, surface installations across global British Airways lounges; a 3-storey high permanent sculptural installation located in the lobby of the Kempinski Hotel Dubai; facades for Hermes, feature walls for Stella McCartney stores and installations for retailers including Harrods, Tiffany & Co, Disney and Omega Watches.
